Oh the pantry. I have a love/hate relationship with it. I love it because it gives me food. I hate it because it never stays organized. So today I decided it was time to clean it out and get it organized and try and keep it that way. Everthing needed a space, labels needed to be made, expired food needed to get tossed.
So here is the before. Hopefully some of you can relate. If not, this is totally embarrasing. There are ‘areas’ for certain kinds of foods but then a bunch of things are just thrown all over the place. The first thing I did was take everything out of the pantry. When I did this I checked expiration dates and if it was expired I put it on our island (its embarrasing how much was on the island…)Once it was cleared out I wiped the shelving down and swept/mopped the floors. Then got to work putting things back in there….in a specific spot. You’ll see there is an area for baking, breakfast, drinks, canned goods, pastas/rice, alcohol (we ae building a drink cart for the dining room when husb is on vacation soon and I can’t wait)…. I used baskets to hold some of the smaller items. There is a snack one for the kids, a candy/gum one, crackers/chips, theres a couple for drinks (mostly teas, koolaid and snow cone juice).
I had glass and plastic containers already but my problem was that I’d put stuff in them and then forgete what they are. So I got chalkboard labels (I was going to make my own out of vinyl, but I didn’t want to wait for my shipment to get here) and a chalk marker. This way if I run out and don’t buy the same thing I can erase and write again.
The floor has a couple containers. One is for my daughters cooking supplies (for her birthday one year she wanted her own set of bowls, pans, utinsils) and the other has extra containers for leftovers and such. I have a large insulated bag (which has extra reusable lunchboxes in it) and our largers bottles….distilled water, vinegar, oil for frying and soap.
I also found enough plastic grocery bags to fill 2 paper bags plus my canvas bag holders plus some. Which brings me to a DIY I’ve had on my list that I’ve been meaning to do. So I will be working on that this week to show you my solution for all those bags.
Do you have any tips/tricks for getting and/or keeping the pantry clean and organized? If so, please share!
